Sue Steiner charmed us with her equine style

When evaluating art, subject matter is one of the things that even the most novice of critics can identify with and internalize. In deciding what we ‘like’ and ‘don’t like,’ subject matter is huge. If I’m being honest, Sue Steiner‘s equine-centric paintings didn’t catch my eye at first – not because they’re not well done (they are), but because, hey, I’m just not that into horses…

I’ve come to discover since my first introdution to Sue’s work that there are many artists who work in the equine niche. Sue has done what every artist in Stark County should do – she’s introduced people to new areas and ideas in art. She’s carving out a place for herself, but showing us that we have much to learn along the way.

When I came back to them again a second time, I realized that what I really love about her pieces is that they’re unusual takes and vibrant versions of their subjects, and there is a great deal of life in each painting. I’ve been charmed by Sue’s work, horses or no horses. For me, each piece works together. The whole is a menagerie of images that is bigger than whether or not I like horses. And who knows, maybe YOU like horses, or are looking for a pet portrait. She has a great collection of farm and wildlife, portraits and mural work, too.

Sue describes her work as “evolving” and her portfolio delivers! If this is the middle of an evolution, I for one can’t wait to see where we’re going next. Check out the array of prints she has on Etsy – the site recently featured this little cutie.

You can visit her permanent gallery, here. The BEST thing about Sue is that she helps other artists to obtain opportunities like she has!

P.S. You’ll never be cool like Sue if you don’t submit your artist portfolio! And if you’ve already submitted, we’ll be picking another hearted artist next week – it might just be you!

  1. Sue Steiner’s horse art is wonderful and so is her other painted subjects. I also like the way the paintings are displayed on this page in a moving slide show.

Thank you! What a great place! I am enjoying this web site as well as being a part of the Canton art scene. It has proven to be so welcoming as well as a place to grow, network and experiment. I can’t believe my first First Friday (as a visitor) was just over a year ago.
