ABOUT THE ARTIST
Georgia Shankel has three passions in life: painting, art direction and filmmaking. In her life before her move to back to Ohio, she was an art director and filmmaker in Chicago and New York, and won several awards including a One Show Award, a Cleo and she was a finalist in the Illinois/Chicago Screenwriting Competition.
In Chicago, Georgia exhibited at the Jim Happy-Delpech Gallery and at the revolutionary, Around the Coyote Art Festival in the Wicker Park neighborhood. In Maine she exhibited at Wingspread Gallery in Northeast Harbor.
Georgia specializes in abstract color but has recently experimented with realistic subjects. Her paintings are all oil on canvas. “It’s impossible to work in Maine without being affected by water and light,” says Shankel. “Still, even my realistic work has abstract sensibilities.”
Georgia is a former vice president, associate creative director for Leo Burnett USA. She was responsible for the creative development and production of advertising for clients such as McDonald’s, Kellogg’s, Philip Morris and Kimberly-Clark. A personal interest in the production process led to Georgia being assigned director for various television commercials for McDonald’s. Before joining Leo Burnett, Georgia held the title of vice president, art supervisor at Marschalk, an Interpublic Company. Clients included Coca-Cola, Gillette, and Finance America, a division of Bank America. Prior to Marschalk, Georgia worked as an art director at Young & Rubicam, New York. Clients included Log Cabin Syrup, Birds Eye Frozen Foods, Jello Gelatin, Jello Pudding, Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder, New York Telephone, Good Year Tires and Clairol.
