Work is available at Henninger’s proviate studio, the Oil Slick, and by contacting her. She participates in a variety of Stark County art shows and does commission work as well.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Joan Henninger was born on her grandpa’s farm in rural New Harrisburg, Ohio. She grew up in Minerva, Ohio, where at age 14 she began art lessons with local artist Jean Calerdine Browne, her mentor for 40 years.

Henninger received a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, with an education major and art minor.

During the 32 years that she taught in the Minerva Local School District, Henninger often used art to motivate her students in all areas of study. Summertime gave her time to paint both locally and on her travels.

Before his death, Henninger and her husband Bill took their dream trip to Europe where they toured art museums and took pictures for future paintings. Bill, a trained draftsman and talented sketcher, drew the pictures and she painted them. The European paintings are not for sale, as they have a special meaning for her, but she will reproduce them.

Henninger prefers to work in oils because you can capture the brilliant colors, as the masters did. Her visits to art museums in Europe enhanced her love of oils. She likes the consistency, durability and even the smell!

Now that Henninger is retired, she has been devoting more time to her love of painting. She often does commission work and always has an art project on the easel in her private studio.

She has exhibited at Butler Art Institute of America, Algonquin Mill Festival, Salem YMCA Art Show, Minerva Arts and Craft Fair, the Stark County Fair, Lost Gold Festival in Minerva, Steam Railroad Museum, and the Carroll County Commission for the Advancement of the Arts in Carrollton. She recently had her painting “Poppies” accepted for the winter show at the Massillon Museum of Art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Painting on site is my favorite thing to do. There is such a freedom when you paint out in the fresh air with God’s beauty all around. I especially like barns, as I grew up around them. Each one is different and so interesting.
