ABOUT THE ARTIST
Megan Mars is a self-taught artist who is extremely passionate about what she does. She was largely inspired by her father, also an artist, who helped to nurture her love of art into more than just a hobby. She has spent her entire life pursuing her love affair with creativity. Everything she does, from work to play, is influenced by her art and the artists she admires and learns from. She spends her free moments with creative projects and by filling book after book with sketches.
Her art has been shown at art galleries and exhibits throughout Canton/Stark County, including 2nd April Galerie, Canton, Ohio, Art is Alive, Canton, Ohio, Canton Museum of Art, Massillon Public Library, Art Bomb Tattoos, Massillon, Ohio. She has also contributed to the Massillon City Beautification Project.
Mars resides in Canton, Ohio, and does several exhibitions each year. She also accepts commissioned work.
ARTIST STATEMENT
For me, art is my emotional release. My rock to cling to in the storm. Expressing myself through my art gives me strength and purpose in life. My art is both a reflection of my heart, and of who and what I want to be. The visual representation of my journey and evolution through life.
Many people look at my art and only see what is there on the surface – and some see sexiness and sensuality as a negative thing. To me though, my art is a way to express the idea that as women, we feel this enormous pressure from men and from society to be the “supermodel.” To be the gorgeous bombshell of a woman that has the perfect body and face, and who is totally in control of everything in her life. Perfect home, perfect partner, etc.
This standard gives little merit to what lies beneath the surface of us all.
Beneath the surface, in the depth of our hearts and souls are all of our fears and insecurities, our strengths and weaknesses. I have never been perfect, and growing up as a chubby and shy little girl, I idolized glamorous women, and the power they had over people. I always try to portray when I can women who are fearless and totally at home in their own skin. Women who are intelligent and brave, who care not a bit for the criticisms of the world.
You could say that the women I paint are the brave face I show to the world in place of my own. They represent to me and the ongoing search for the Goddess inside myself. :)
